We investigated the effects of 2,3-dehydrosilybin, a component of silybum marianum, on heart protection during ischemia and reperfusion injuries in rats. Hearts treated with low doses of this compound experienced significantly reduced damage compared to untreated ones—only about 7.5% of the heart was affected versus over 75% in controls.

This suggests that silybum marianum could effectively support heart health by minimizing injury during heart attacks. Importantly, when specific kinases were inhibited, this protective effect vanished, highlighting the complexity of the mechanisms involved.

Silybum marianum shows heart protection
We examined how silybum marianum, commonly known as milk thistle, impacts the heart during and after a heart attack in pigs.

In the first phase of our study, animals that received milk thistle before a heart attack showed reduced heart damage compared to those who did not.

In the recovery period, those on a continuous milk thistle diet also displayed better heart remodeling and function.

However, there were no significant benefits observed in pigs without heart attacks.

We explored the potential benefits of Silybum marianum (SM) on heart health, specifically looking at its effects on cardiac lipotoxicity after a heart attack in pigs. In our study, pigs received either SM or a placebo for ten days.

The results were promising; those treated with SM showed a significant decrease in plasma triglyceride levels. This reduction was linked to less absorption of triglycerides and improved heart function.

Despite these findings, no significant adverse effects were noted, suggesting that SM may play a role in better heart recovery post-infarction.

Positive initial effects
So far, I've had positive results with this product. I have only taken it briefly but I'm pleased with the effects I've noticed, aside from the heart attack I had, which I believe isn’t related to the medicine.
